Once upon a time Puerto Rico was a cheap resort, but that is not the case today. However, there are ways to to get the best out of your vacation and still save money. Puerto Rico largely depends on imported goods and fuel, which significantly affects the price. Even more, Puerto Rico geographically belongs to the Caribbean, which are very popular among tourists from all over the world.
We present with five tips for a great vacation in Puerto Rico, while on a tight budget:
A half an hour drive from San Juan will get you to a real tropical rainforest. El Junke is a pleasant cool oasis in the hot summer days. There are well maintained walking trails, and you can enjoy the cool water of the river and the mesmerizing waterfall.
This island has many beaches – some say even 300. When in the capital, Isla Verde Beach is great for swimming and relaxing on the beautiful soft sand. Plajita del Condado is children friendly and also great for diving, but the farthest you go from the capital city, the beaches get even more beautiful. Crash Boat Beach, which is an hour’s drive from San Juan offers excellent conditions for swimming and diving, while Maria’s Beach near the town of Rincon is excellent for surfing.
The entrance to the Fort San Felipe del Morro is paid, but you will actually see the best of it completely free. Namely, El Morro fortress has a huge lawn in front of the wall which is a popular place for picnics and paper kites aficionados.
Old San Juan
The old part of the city bears the colonial heart of San Juan. Its cobbled streets are very clean, and there are a number of stores, workshops and cafes. There is also a house that is claimed to be the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Large cruisers enter the port of the city every day, and the whole town is full of tourists.
Music and salsa
Mercado Square is a great place to listen to free live music, located in a part of the city with the best restaurants in Puerto Rico. During the weekends there are music and dancing evenings in the El San Juan Hotel lobby. The bar is not free of course, but there is no admission charge. Interestingly, most of the restaurants and hotels in the city even organize free salsa classes.
